There are three different types of signs regulating parking in Belgium:

Prohibition sign The sign (E1) represented by a blue circle surrounded by a crossed red circle indicates the prohibition of parking in the street where it is located.

Stopping prohibition sign This sign (E3), represented by a blue circle surrounded by a red circle with a red cross, indicates that stopping and parking are prohibited in the street where it is located.

free parking sign This sign (E9a) represented by the white letter P on a blue background indicates that parking is allowed and free.

Parking forbidden

Prohibition sign The sign (E1) represented by a blue circle surrounded by a crossed red circle indicates the prohibition of parking in the street where it is located.

This prohibition is permanent unless the sign is accompanied by another sign indicating the hours and/or days of prohibition.

7-19 sign Ex: Prohibition of parking from 7 to 19h.

monday-friday sign Ex: No parking from Monday to Friday.

Variation: Parking prohibited alternately

The signs (E5 and E7) indicates an alternate parking ban. The prohibition dates will then be indicated on the sign.

1-15 Prohibition sign No parking from the 1st to the 15th of the month.

16-31 prohibition sign No parking from the 16th to the 31st of the month.

These two signs may be accompanied by an additional sign:

Disc sign Sign indicating that outside the prohibition dates, the disc must be used.

Residents sign With the exception of people having a resident card when this same sign indicates "except residents".

Paid sign An additional sign mentioning "paid" means that the parking is not free outside the forbidden parking dates.

Paid residents sign With the exception of people having a resident card when this same sign indicates "except residents".

Arrow sign An additional sign representing a "black arrow on a white background" indicates the direction or distance of the regulation.

In case of non-compliance with the parking prohibition you risk a parking fine issued by the police. If you do not follow complementary signs, you risk a generally less expensive parking fee.

Stopping and parking forbidden

Stopping prohibition sign This sign (E3), represented by a blue circle surrounded by a red circle with a red cross, indicates that stopping and parking are prohibited in the street where it is located.

This prohibition is permanent unless the sign is accompanied by another sign indicating the hours and/or days of prohibition.

7-19 sign Ex: Prohibition of stopping and parking from 7 to 19h.

monday-friday sign Ex: No stopping and parking from Monday to Friday.

It is also possible that parking is permanently prohibited while stopping is allowed for specific hours. This will be indicated as follows: Parking is prohibited at all times. Stopping is forbidden from ... to ... h.

Arrow sign An additional sign representing a "black arrow on a white background" indicates the direction or distance of the regulation.

In case of non-compliance with the stopping and parking prohibition you risk a parking fine issued by the police. If you do not follow complementary signs, you risk a generally less expensive parking fee.

Authorized or regulated parking

The signs below, represented by the white letter P on a blue background, indicate that parking is allowed but can also be regulated.

free parking sign E9a. Free and unrestricted parking for all types of vehicles.

Car sign E9b. Free and authorized parking only for cars, motorbikes and minibuses.

motorcycle sign E9i. Free and authorized parking only for motorcycles.

coaches sign E9d. Free and authorized parking only for coaches.

truck sign E9c. Free and authorized parking only for trucks and vans.

motorhomes sign E9h. Free and authorized parking only for motorhomes.

sidewalk sign E9e. Free and authorized parking with the obligation to park on the shoulder or sidewalk.

wheels sign E9f. Free and authorized parking with the obligation to park with two wheels on the shoulder or sidewalk.

sidewalk prohibition sign E9g. Free and authorized parking with the obligation to park on the roadway.

disc parking sign E9. Free and authorized parking with the obligation to use a parking disk.

Disabled sign E9. Free and authorized parking only for people with reduced mobility.

These signs may be accompanied by another sign indicating the maximum duration, the precise hours when parking is allowed or that parking is not free.

30 minutes sign Ex: Parking allowed for 30 minutes.

7-19 sign Ex: Parking allowed only from 7h to 19h.

Ticket sign Ex: Paid parking. Getting a ticket from the ticket machine or parking meter is required.

Arrow sign An additional sign representing a "black arrow on a white background" indicates the direction or distance of the regulation.

There are also additional signs that can indicate the category of vehicle authorized to park.

Taxi sign Ex: Parking allowed only for taxis.

Electric sign Ex: Reserved parking for electric vehicles.

Bicycle sign Ex: Parking allowed only for bicycles.

Ex: Parking authorized only for bicycles and mopeds.
